Outer Ear Infections (Otitis Externa): What You Need to Know

Otitis externa is an infection of the outer ear canal. It can cause itching, pain, redness, and sometimes discharge from the ear. The condition is often caused by bacteria or fungi.

Symptoms:

  • Pain or discomfort in the ear

  • Itching inside the ear canal

  • Fluid or pus draining from the ear

  • Reduced hearing or a sensation of fullness

Management and Treatment: Most cases can be treated with ear drops, antibiotics, or antifungals. Pain relief, such as paracetamol, can help with discomfort. In some cases, cleaning of the ear by a healthcare professional may be necessary.

When to See an ENT Specialist: If symptoms persist for more than a few days, worsen, or if there’s severe pain, fever, or hearing loss, it’s important to see an ENT specialist. Early treatment can prevent complications and ensure faster recovery.

Prevention Tips:

  • Keep ears dry and clean

  • Avoid inserting objects into the ear canal

  • Use earplugs when swimming
